1. Introduction

Why Does APS Resonate Across Cultures?

Across the history of philosophy, widely separated intellectual traditions have often developed strikingly different ways of understanding living systems. Aristotle placed living activity at the centre of biological explanation, process philosophers emphasised continuity and becoming, Daoist thought highlighted transformation and dynamic balance, and Confucian philosophy understood organisation through enduring relational structures. Contemporary theoretical biology, meanwhile, increasingly explains living systems in terms of organisation, regulation, autonomy, and constraint rather than through static descriptions alone.

These traditions differ profoundly in their historical origins, cultural settings, and philosophical commitments. Their similarities should therefore not be overstated. Yet each appears, in its own way, to recognise that living systems cannot be adequately understood as collections of isolated parts or as passive objects of analysis. Instead, they direct attention toward activity, organisation, continuity, relation, and transformation as central features of life.

The Agency–Process–Scale (APS) Framework emerged independently from a different starting point. Developed as a biologically grounded framework within theoretical biology, APS seeks to explain life through viability-oriented, constraint-closed organisation and the organisational activity through which living systems maintain and re-establish the conditions of their own persistence. It was not developed through engagement with Eastern philosophy, process metaphysics, or classical philosophical traditions. Nevertheless, readers from markedly different philosophical backgrounds have frequently recognised conceptual affinities between APS and these diverse approaches.

This observation raises an important question. Why should a contemporary biological framework developed independently within theoretical biology appear conceptually familiar to traditions separated by centuries, cultures, and philosophical assumptions? The answer cannot simply be historical influence, shared terminology, or conceptual borrowing. Nor is it sufficient to conclude that these traditions are “really saying the same thing.” Their differences remain substantial and scientifically important.

This article proposes a different explanation. The comparison developed here is explanatory rather than historical. Its purpose is not to trace intellectual influence, establish lines of conceptual borrowing, or suggest that diverse traditions ultimately converge upon the same philosophical doctrine. Instead, it investigates whether independently developed traditions repeatedly recover related organisational concepts because they confront the same organisational characteristics of living systems.

Rather than asking whether APS resembles particular philosophical traditions, it asks why independent traditions repeatedly converge upon related organisational concepts when attempting to understand living systems.

The central hypothesis is that the organisation of life itself constrains the organisation of successful explanation. Living systems present recurring explanatory problems—including activity, continuity, transformation, relation, regulation, and persistence—that repeatedly direct inquiry toward corresponding organisational concepts, even within otherwise unrelated intellectual traditions.

APS is developed within the contemporary movement in theoretical biology that increasingly explains living systems through organisation, autonomy, regulation, constraint, and persistence rather than through static descriptions of structure alone. It therefore shares important concerns with organisational approaches to biology while advancing a distinct explanatory proposal. The present article is not intended to position APS outside this broader research landscape, but to examine whether its organisational architecture also helps explain why related concepts recur across otherwise independent philosophical traditions. Within this explanatory framework, the significance of APS lies not in synthesising Eastern and Western philosophy, nor in providing a new metaphysical account of reality. Its contribution is methodological. APS proposes a biologically grounded explanatory grammar centred on viability-oriented, constraint-closed organisation through which these recurring organisational requirements may be understood as coherent aspects of living systems. Comparative analysis therefore serves not to establish philosophical dependence but to illuminate why different traditions independently recover complementary dimensions of biological organisation. Many independent intellectual traditions—including philosophical, scientific, and Indigenous traditions—have developed concepts that emphasise activity, relation, continuity, transformation, or organisation when seeking to understand living systems. The present article examines a small number of influential cases that are sufficiently diverse to investigate whether such recurring organisational concepts arise from common explanatory demands rather than shared historical inheritance.

The discussion proceeds in seven stages. It first examines the distinct explanatory questions that shaped Aristotle, process philosophy, Daoism, Confucian philosophy, and contemporary organisational biology. It then outlines the biological architecture of APS before comparing points of genuine convergence and divergence. Building upon these comparisons, the article argues that explanatory convergence reflects the organisational character of living systems rather than shared historical inheritance. It concludes by showing how APS integrates these recurring organisational insights within a unified biological framework while remaining methodologically naturalistic and firmly grounded in theoretical biology.

2. Different Traditions, Different Questions

Comparisons between philosophical traditions often begin by identifying apparent similarities in language or conceptual emphasis. Such an approach, however, risks obscuring the fact that similar concepts may arise in response to fundamentally different explanatory questions. Activity, process, relation, or organisation do not carry identical meanings across intellectual traditions simply because the same terms are employed. Their significance depends upon the problems they were originally introduced to address. This distinction is particularly important when comparing biological frameworks with philosophical traditions. Aristotle’s investigations sought to understand what distinguishes living organisms from non-living entities and how their characteristic activities express their organisation. Process philosophy asks more generally how continuity and becoming should be understood within an evolving reality. Daoist thought explores transformation, harmony, and the dynamic character of the natural world, while Confucian philosophy investigates the relational organisation through which stable social and ethical life becomes possible. Contemporary theoretical biology addresses a different set of questions again, focusing on the organisation, regulation, development, adaptation, and persistence of living systems within the natural sciences.

These traditions therefore differ not merely in their conclusions but in their explanatory aims. Treating them as variants of a single philosophical position risks flattening important distinctions and encouraging superficial analogies. The purpose of the present comparison is consequently not to demonstrate that these traditions agree, nor to suggest that APS synthesises their ideas. Rather, it is to examine whether they independently illuminate complementary organisational dimensions of living systems while remaining committed to different explanatory projects. Recognising these differing starting points provides the methodological foundation for the analysis that follows. Before meaningful comparison can occur, APS itself must be presented as a biological framework with its own explanatory objectives, conceptual architecture, and scientific commitments. Only then is it possible to assess where genuine convergence exists, where important differences remain, and why those convergences may nevertheless prove philosophically significant.

3. APS Begins with Living Organisation

Having established the comparative question, the discussion now turns to APS itself. Before meaningful comparison with other traditions is possible, APS must first be understood on its own terms as a biologically grounded explanatory framework. Its concepts were developed in response to problems arising within theoretical biology rather than through engagement with particular philosophical traditions. The comparisons that follow therefore seek to illuminate APS rather than define it.

APS begins from a simple but demanding explanatory question: what organisation makes living systems scientifically intelligible? Rather than treating life as a collection of characteristic properties or as a special kind of substance, APS approaches living systems through the organisation that enables them to maintain themselves despite continual material and environmental change. The central explanatory target is therefore not matter, mechanism, or process considered in isolation, but the organised activity through which living systems continually preserve the conditions of their own existence.

Within APS, life is defined as viability-oriented, constraint-closed organisation. This definition identifies life not by a list of empirical properties but by the distinctive organisation through which living systems actively maintain and re-establish the conditions necessary for their continued persistence. Organisation is therefore understood dynamically rather than statically. Living systems are not simply organised; they continually organise themselves through ongoing activity.

This emphasis naturally leads to the concept of agency. APS defines biological agency as the viability-oriented organisational activity through which living systems enact and sustain their own organisation. Agency is therefore neither an optional capacity possessed only by cognitively sophisticated organisms nor a synonym for intentional action, decision-making, or consciousness. It is the defining activity through which living organisation becomes operational. Every subsequent aspect of biological organisation presupposes this ongoing organisational activity. Agency alone, however, does not explain the remarkable continuity characteristic of living systems. Organisms develop, repair, regulate, reproduce, adapt, and evolve while undergoing continual material turnover and environmental interaction. APS therefore introduces the concept of organised persistence as the central explanatory principle through which continuity is understood. Organised persistence refers to the continual re-establishment of organisational continuity through change. Persistence is not equivalent to mere survival, duration, or stability; rather, it denotes the active maintenance of organisational integrity despite continual transformation.

The maintenance of organised persistence requires continual responsiveness to changing conditions. APS explains this responsiveness through biological evaluation, the process by which agency generates significance relative to the viability of the living system. Biological evaluation does not presuppose conscious judgement or reflective deliberation. Instead, it identifies the organisational process through which conditions become differentially significant according to their consequences for the continued organisation of the system. Significance is therefore not externally imposed but emerges from the organisation of living activity itself.

These concepts form part of a broader explanatory architecture rather than a sequence of independent ideas. Life, agency, organised persistence, biological evaluation, and significance are related through relations of architectural dependency. Each concept becomes intelligible through its place within the overall organisation of the framework rather than through isolated definition. APS therefore seeks to explain not only individual biological concepts but also the organisational relationships that make those concepts mutually intelligible.

The resulting architecture extends beyond the immediate explanation of life. Biological evaluation gives rise to significance, significance becomes organised through integration, integration supports cognition, cognition enables the emergence of mind and selfhood, while social organisation develops through values, shared evaluation, norm formation, and morality. These later developments are not additions to the framework but organisational extensions of the same underlying explanatory principles. APS therefore presents biological, cognitive, social, and moral organisation as interconnected domains whose relationships can be understood through a common explanatory grammar without reducing one domain to another.

This architecture is summarised by the complementary analytic projections of Agency, Process, and Scale. These are not independent causal factors or separate levels of explanation. Rather, they are complementary perspectives through which the same viability-oriented, constraint-closed organisation may be examined. Agency asks what living systems do, Process examines how organisational continuity is maintained through change, and Scale identifies where persistence is organised across spatial and temporal extents. Together they provide a unified framework for investigating living organisation without fragmenting it into separate explanatory domains.

APS therefore proposes neither a new metaphysics nor an alternative biology. Its objective is methodological: to provide an explanatory grammar capable of rendering living organisation scientifically intelligible. Only once this biological architecture has been established is it possible to ask whether independently developed philosophical traditions illuminate related organisational dimensions and, if so, why such convergence should occur.

4. Independent Organisational Insights

The preceding section established APS as a biologically grounded explanatory framework in its own right. The present discussion now turns to comparison. The objective is neither to trace historical influence nor to suggest that diverse philosophical traditions converge upon identical conclusions. Instead, the purpose is to determine whether independently developed traditions illuminate complementary organisational dimensions of living systems and, if so, how APS interprets those insights within its own biological architecture.

The traditions examined in this article were not selected to provide an exhaustive survey of philosophical approaches to life, nor because they are uniquely compatible with APS. Rather, they were chosen because each has exercised lasting influence upon discussions of living organisation while independently emphasising one or more organisational dimensions that remain central to contemporary biological explanation. Together they provide a sufficiently diverse comparative sample for investigating whether recurring organisational concepts arise from shared historical inheritance or from the explanatory demands imposed by living systems themselves.

The comparisons that follow therefore proceed according to a common principle. Each tradition is first understood in relation to its own explanatory question before points of convergence and divergence with APS are identified. Similarity of language alone is not taken as evidence of conceptual agreement. Rather, the comparison asks whether related organisational concepts arise because living systems present recurring explanatory demands that different intellectual traditions have sought to understand in their own ways.

Aristotle: Living Activity and Organismic Organisation

Aristotle’s biological investigations were directed toward understanding what distinguishes living organisms from non-living entities and how their characteristic activities express their organisation. Living beings are not defined merely by their material composition but by the organised activities through which they realise their characteristic forms of life. Explanation therefore centres upon the organism as an organised whole whose activities reveal its distinctive mode of existence.

APS converges with Aristotle in recognising that living systems must be understood through their organised activity rather than through material composition alone. Both approaches reject the reduction of organisms to collections of independently functioning parts and instead emphasise that biological organisation gives coherence to the activities of the living system. In this respect, Aristotle anticipates an enduring insight: life is fundamentally organisational rather than merely material. The divergence, however, is equally important. Aristotle explains biological organisation through the metaphysical framework of form, substance, and teleology. APS instead naturalises organisation through viability-oriented, constraint-closed organisation and the continual activity of agency. Purpose is explained biologically rather than metaphysically, and organisational continuity is understood through organised persistence rather than through substantial form.

The comparison therefore reveals genuine conceptual resonance without implying theoretical continuity. Aristotle recognised the importance of organised living activity; APS seeks to explain that activity within a contemporary biological framework.

Whitehead: Continuity Through Process

Process philosophy begins from a different explanatory problem. Whitehead sought to understand the nature of reality through becoming rather than static being, arguing that continuity, relation, and process are more fundamental than enduring substances. Reality is therefore interpreted as an ongoing process of relational development rather than as a collection of independently existing objects.

APS shares Whitehead’s rejection of static descriptions as sufficient for understanding living systems. Living organisation can only be understood through continual activity and ongoing organisational renewal. Continuity is therefore achieved through dynamic organisation rather than through material permanence. Despite this convergence, APS does not adopt process metaphysics. Its concern is not with the ultimate character of reality but with the scientific intelligibility of living systems. Process is important because living organisation cannot persist without continual organisational activity, not because all reality is fundamentally processual. Whitehead therefore illuminates an important organisational dimension—continuity through becoming—while APS locates that insight within a specifically biological explanatory framework.

Daoism: Transformation and Dynamic Organisation

Classical Daoist thought approaches the natural world through continual transformation, relational balance, and dynamic responsiveness. Rather than treating stability and change as opposing principles, Daoist philosophy understands continuity as emerging through ongoing transformation. Living systems are therefore interpreted within a broader conception of natural process characterised by continual adaptation and relational harmony.

APS converges with Daoism in recognising that persistence is achieved through continual change rather than despite it. Organised persistence likewise rejects any opposition between continuity and transformation. Living systems maintain themselves precisely by continually reorganising their activities in response to changing internal and external conditions. The divergence again lies in explanatory purpose. Daoism presents a comprehensive philosophical vision of the natural world, whereas APS seeks to explain the organisation of living systems within theoretical biology. Transformation acquires biological significance because it contributes to viability-oriented organisation rather than because it expresses a universal metaphysical principle. The comparison therefore demonstrates that transformation is an enduring organisational insight while showing how APS naturalises that insight within biological explanation.

Confucianism: Relational Organisation

Confucian philosophy investigates how enduring social order becomes possible through stable patterns of relational organisation. Individual identity is understood within networks of reciprocal relationships whose continual maintenance enables both personal cultivation and social continuity. Organisation therefore arises not through isolated individuals but through enduring relational structures. APS converges with this emphasis upon organisation through relation. Living systems likewise exist through networks of organisational dependencies rather than through independently functioning components. Relations are constitutive of biological organisation rather than merely external connections between pre-existing entities. APS nevertheless distinguishes biological organisation from social and moral organisation. Confucian philosophy primarily addresses ethical and political life, whereas APS begins from living systems themselves before explaining how biological organisation may subsequently support cognition, values, social organisation, morality, and ethics. Relational organisation is therefore interpreted as one organisational dimension within a broader biological architecture.

Confucian thought thus highlights the importance of enduring relational organisation while APS explains how relational organisation emerges within the larger framework of organised persistence.

Contemporary Organisational Biology

Modern theoretical biology increasingly explains living systems through concepts such as organisation, autonomy, regulation, constraint, development, and self-maintenance. Organisational approaches, autopoiesis, systems biology, enactivism, and constraint-based biology all recognise that living systems cannot be adequately understood through linear causal description alone. Instead, explanation increasingly focuses upon the organised relationships through which biological systems maintain themselves over time.

APS shares this organisational orientation while proposing a more comprehensive explanatory architecture. Organisation becomes intelligible through viability-oriented, constraint-closed organisation; agency identifies the defining activity of living systems; organised persistence explains continuity through change; biological evaluation explains the emergence of significance; and architectural dependency clarifies the organisational relationships between explanatory concepts themselves.

APS therefore stands within the contemporary movement toward organisational biology while seeking to provide an explanatory grammar capable of integrating its central organisational insights within a single coherent biological framework.

The comparisons presented in this section reveal a striking pattern. Each tradition independently identifies an important organisational dimension of living systems—activity, continuity, transformation, relational organisation, or constraint-based regulation. None, however, attempts to integrate all of these dimensions within a unified biological explanatory architecture. This recurring pattern raises the central question of the article. Why should independently developed traditions repeatedly recover complementary organisational insights despite their profound historical and philosophical differences? The following section proposes that this convergence reflects not shared intellectual ancestry but the recurring explanatory demands imposed by living organisation itself.

The Explanatory Convergence Principle

5. Why Convergence Occurs

The preceding comparisons reveal an unexpected pattern. Aristotle, process philosophy, Daoism, Confucian philosophy, and contemporary organisational biology differ profoundly in their historical development, philosophical commitments, and explanatory aims. Yet each independently identifies organisational dimensions that prove central to understanding living systems. Activity, continuity, transformation, relational organisation, regulation, and persistence repeatedly emerge as explanatory themes despite the absence of a shared intellectual programme.

The existence of this pattern invites explanation. It is not sufficient simply to observe conceptual similarities, nor is it methodologically appropriate to infer historical influence or hidden agreement from their presence. Similar concepts may arise independently when different investigators confront the same explanatory phenomenon. The question therefore becomes whether the recurrence of these organisational themes reflects something more fundamental than philosophical coincidence.

APS proposes that it does. The central claim of this article is that the organisation of living systems places constraints upon successful biological explanation. Living systems continually maintain themselves despite material turnover, environmental variability, developmental change, and evolutionary transformation. Any explanatory framework seeking to understand such systems must therefore address recurring organisational problems. These include the generation of coordinated activity, the maintenance of continuity through change, the regulation of internal organisation, responsiveness to changing conditions, and the preservation of viability across multiple spatial and temporal extents.

These recurring explanatory requirements do not determine a single philosophical vocabulary, nor do they guarantee identical theoretical conclusions. Different traditions interpret them through different conceptual frameworks and pursue different explanatory objectives. Nevertheless, because the underlying phenomenon remains the same, successful inquiry is repeatedly directed toward organisational concepts capable of illuminating these persistent biological problems.

This proposal may be expressed as the Explanatory Convergence Principle:

The organisation of life constrains the organisation of successful biological explanation. Consequently, independent traditions repeatedly recover related organisational concepts because they are responding to recurring explanatory requirements imposed by living systems themselves.

This principle does not claim that all traditions are equivalent or that they converge upon a common metaphysical doctrine. It instead concerns the relationship between an explanatory target and the conceptual resources required to investigate it. Living organisation is not arbitrary in its structure, and explanation cannot be arbitrary in its organisation. Certain concepts repeatedly become scientifically productive because they illuminate genuine organisational features of living systems.

The comparative analyses presented in the previous section illustrate this point. Aristotle foregrounds organised activity; Whitehead emphasises continuity through becoming; Daoism highlights transformation; Confucian philosophy examines enduring relational organisation; and contemporary organisational biology focuses upon regulation, autonomy, and constraint. Each tradition illuminates an authentic organisational dimension, yet none by itself explains why these dimensions belong together as aspects of a single biological phenomenon.

APS interprets this recurring pattern differently. Rather than treating activity, continuity, transformation, relation, regulation, and persistence as independent themes, it understands them as mutually dependent expressions of viability-oriented, constraint-closed organisation. Agency explains organised activity; organised persistence explains continuity through change; biological evaluation explains how conditions acquire significance relative to viability; architectural dependency explains how these concepts become intelligible through their relationships within a unified explanatory framework. The recurrence of organisational themes across traditions is therefore interpreted as evidence of recurring explanatory demands rather than of conceptual identity.

This interpretation also clarifies why APS neither synthesises nor replaces the traditions examined. Aristotle remains concerned with organismic explanation, Whitehead with process metaphysics, Daoism with transformation and natural order, Confucianism with relational social organisation, and contemporary biology with empirical investigation of living systems. APS enters into dialogue with each because each contributes insight into an organisational dimension that living systems genuinely exhibit. The relationship is therefore complementary rather than competitive. Understanding convergence in this way has broader implications for theoretical biology and the philosophy of biology. Comparative philosophy is often organised around questions of historical influence, conceptual borrowing, or doctrinal similarity. While such questions remain valuable, they do not fully explain why similar organisational concepts repeatedly emerge across otherwise independent traditions. APS suggests that a deeper explanation lies in the organisational character of life itself. The explanatory landscape is shaped not only by intellectual history but also by the biological phenomenon that investigators seek to understand.

If this interpretation is correct, the significance of APS extends beyond comparison. Its contribution is not simply to identify recurring organisational concepts but to integrate them within a biologically grounded explanatory grammar. The convergence observed across traditions therefore becomes intelligible as a consequence of the explanatory demands imposed by living organisation rather than as evidence of shared metaphysical commitments.

This conclusion naturally raises a further question. If recurring organisational insights arise because living systems constrain successful explanation, what distinctive explanatory contribution does APS itself make? The final section addresses this question by examining the concepts that distinguish APS from the traditions with which it has been compared and by clarifying its contribution to contemporary theoretical biology.

Science

Science presents a distinctive case within this comparative argument. Its methods are not confined to a single cultural tradition in the way that particular philosophical vocabularies or cosmological narratives may be. Scientific claims can be investigated, criticised, reproduced, and revised by researchers across cultural and historical contexts. In this qualified sense, science provides an increasingly universal mode of inquiry: its explanations are constrained by publicly accessible evidence, systematic testing, and the shared characteristics of the phenomena under investigation.

This universality should not, however, be confused with complete independence from history or culture. Scientific questions, concepts, models, and explanatory standards are developed within particular intellectual settings and remain subject to conceptual revision. The cross-cultural reach of science therefore arises neither from a culture-free standpoint nor from the equivalence of all explanatory traditions, but from practices that progressively expose claims to common empirical constraints. In the present argument, scientific universality strengthens rather than displaces the Explanatory Convergence Principle. If researchers working within different traditions repeatedly recover concepts of activity, organisation, regulation, continuity, and persistence, this may reflect not merely the diffusion of scientific vocabulary but the recurrent explanatory demands imposed by living systems themselves.

6. APS’s Distinctive Contribution

The preceding discussion has argued that independent philosophical and scientific traditions repeatedly recover related organisational concepts because living systems impose recurring explanatory requirements. If this interpretation is correct, the originality of APS does not lie in recognising activity, continuity, transformation, relation, or regulation as important features of living systems. These organisational dimensions have been identified, in different ways, throughout the history of biological and philosophical thought.

The distinctive contribution of APS lies elsewhere. It seeks to explain how these organisational dimensions belong together within a single biologically grounded explanatory architecture. Rather than introducing another concept into an already crowded theoretical landscape, APS proposes an explanatory grammar through which recurring organisational concepts become mutually intelligible.

The starting point for this grammar is the definition of life as viability-oriented, constraint-closed organisation. This definition establishes the explanatory target of the framework. Life is understood neither as a particular substance nor as a collection of characteristic properties, but as a distinctive mode of organisation that continually maintains and re-establishes the conditions of its own persistence. Within this framework, agency becomes the defining activity of living systems. Agency is not identified with behaviour, intentionality, decision-making, or consciousness. It is the organisational activity through which living systems enact and sustain their own viability. Because every living system must continually maintain the organisation upon which its persistence depends, agency is not an optional characteristic of life but its defining activity. Organised persistence provides the corresponding principle of continuity. Living systems remain identifiable through continual developmental, physiological, ecological, and evolutionary change. APS explains this continuity not by appealing to static identity or enduring material composition, but through the continual re-establishment of organisational integrity. Persistence is therefore understood as an active organisational achievement rather than as passive endurance.

APS further proposes that viability requires continual biological evaluation. Living systems must discriminate between conditions according to their consequences for continued organisation. Biological evaluation identifies this ongoing organisational process through which significance is generated relative to viability. Significance is therefore not externally assigned, nor does it depend upon reflective consciousness. It emerges from the organisational requirements of living activity itself and subsequently provides the basis for cognition, values, social organisation, morality, and meaning.

These concepts are not presented as isolated theoretical proposals. APS represents proposed relationships among them through its pathway architecture. Architectural Dependency treats those pathway connections as explicit dependency hypotheses rather than as self-validating conceptual sequences. Life, agency, organised persistence, biological evaluation, significance, cognition, and social organisation therefore form an organised conceptual system, while the particular dependency claims connecting them remain open to independent assessment.

This emphasis upon explanatory organisation also clarifies the role of the Agency–Process–Scale framework. Agency, Process, and Scale are not separate causal domains or competing levels of explanation.
