Definition
A virus is a biological entity capable of replication and evolutionary change through host systems but unable to independently maintain viability-oriented organisation. In APS, viruses occupy an important boundary position because they participate in biological processes and evolutionary history while lacking the autonomous organised persistence characteristic of living organisms.
In Brief

A virus is a biologically active replicator that depends upon host organisation for persistence.
