Living systems maintain viability through continual interaction with changing environmental conditions. Resource acquisition, gas exchange, habitat modification, behavioural activity, and ecological interactions all contribute to organised persistence because they are integrated into the organism’s viability-oriented organisation.
Distributed Functional Organisation therefore extends Functional Organisation beyond the organism’s internal physiology while preserving the organism as the locus of Biological Agency.
Why It Matters
Distributed Functional Organisation explains why biological organisation cannot be understood exclusively in terms of internal physiological processes.
Many biological functions are realised only through the coordinated relationships that organisms maintain with their surroundings. Explaining these functions therefore requires understanding the organisation of organism–environment interactions rather than focusing solely on processes occurring within the organism.
This concept extends Functional Organisation beyond internal physiology without dissolving the distinction between organism and environment.
What It Is Not
Distributed Functional Organisation does not imply that the environment is a biological agent.
Nor does it imply that biological agency is distributed across organisms and environments as equivalent organisational centres.
Within APS, biological agency belongs to living systems, while environmental structures and conditions contribute to the organisational context within which agency is realised.
Distributed Functional Organisation therefore concerns the organisation of biological functions across organism–environment relationships, not the distribution of agency itself.
Relationship to Other APS Concepts
Distributed Functional Organisation extends Functional Organisation beyond internal physiological coordination to encompass the organised relationships through which organisms continually interact with their environments.
It depends upon Adaptive Reorganisation, because organism–environment relationships are continually adjusted as internal and environmental conditions change.
Together these organisational relationships contribute to Operational Persistence, the continuing organisational accomplishment through which living systems maintain viability.
