Living systems persist because biological functions operate as coordinated organisational relationships rather than as isolated physiological or behavioural activities. Metabolism, regulation, repair, development, behaviour, and reproduction each contribute to viability through their integration within the continuing organisation of the living system.
Functional Organisation therefore explains how diverse biological functions collectively realise the continuing organisation of life despite continual material turnover, developmental change, and environmental variation.
Why It Matters
Functional Organisation explains why biological explanation cannot stop with identifying individual functions or the mechanisms that realise them.
Knowing what a particular function contributes does not by itself explain how living systems persist. Persistence depends upon the coordinated organisation of many mutually dependent functions whose integrated activity continually maintains viability-oriented organisation.
Functional Organisation therefore provides the organisational framework within which biological functions acquire their biological significance.
What It Is Not
Functional Organisation is not simply the presence of many functions within the same organism.
It is not a catalogue of physiological activities, nor merely the structural arrangement of biological components.
Nor is it identical with mechanism. Mechanisms materially realise biological functions, but Functional Organisation concerns the coordinated organisational relationships through which those functions collectively contribute to organised persistence.
Relationship to Other APS Concepts
Functional Organisation builds upon Biological Function by explaining how individual functions become integrated within the continuing activity of living systems.
One dimension of Functional Organisation is Functional Integration, which explains how diverse functions are coordinated into mutually supportive organisational relationships.
It provides the foundation for Functional Equivalence, through which different mechanisms may realise the same organisational role, and for Adaptive Reorganisation, through which those functional relationships are continually adjusted under changing conditions.
Together these organisational concepts contribute to Operational Persistence, the continuing organisational accomplishment through which living systems maintain viability.
