Why It Matters

Constraint Modulation explains why living organisation is an ongoing activity rather than a static state.

Living systems continually experience internal and external change. Persistence therefore depends not simply upon possessing appropriate constraints but upon continually maintaining and re-establishing the organisation those constraints realise.

Constraint Modulation explains how viability-oriented organisation is sustained despite continual material turnover, environmental variation, development, repair, and evolutionary transformation.

It therefore provides the dynamic organisational counterpart to Constraint Closure.

What It Is Not

Constraint Modulation is not equivalent to regulation.

Regulatory mechanisms are particular biological processes that may contribute to Constraint Modulation. Constraint Modulation refers to the broader organisational activity through which living systems continually sustain the constraints required for their own persistence.

Constraint Modulation is not identical with homeostasis.

Homeostasis is one important manifestation of Constraint Modulation but does not exhaust it. Development, repair, adaptation, growth, and many forms of organisational reconfiguration also involve Constraint Modulation whenever they contribute to maintaining viability-oriented organisation.

Constraint Modulation is not externally directed control.

Within APS, the modulation of constraints arises through the organisation of the living system itself rather than being imposed by an external designer, controller, or governing principle.

It is enacted through Biological Agency, preserves Biological Organisation, and continually re-establishes the conditions required for Viability and Organised Persistence.
