Variation, fitness, and natural selection are closely related, but they do not explain the same aspect of evolutionary organisation. APS distinguishes them because each occupies a different position within the continuity architecture of evolutionary transformation.
Variation concerns the generation of differences within inherited, persistence-sustaining organisation. Living systems continuously reorganise themselves through development, organism–environment coupling, and adaptive activity. As a result, inherited continuity is never reproduced identically. Variation explains where evolutionary differences come from.
Fitness concerns differences in continuity among these varying forms of organisation. Some forms of persistence-sustaining organisation contribute more effectively to future continuity than others under particular developmental and ecological conditions. Fitness reflects these differences in continuity. It does not generate variation but evaluates the continuity consequences of variation.
Natural selection concerns the differential historical stabilisation of those differences in continuity. Selection does not create variation and does not determine fitness. Rather, it operates upon historically existing differences among forms of organised persistence, influencing which forms contribute more successfully to future continuity across populations and generations.
These processes therefore form a sequence rather than competing explanations. Variation generates differences within continuity. Fitness reflects differences in continuity. Natural selection differentially stabilises those differences through evolutionary time. Together they connect the production of novelty to the historical transformation of organised persistence.
