Variation, adaptation, fitness, and natural selection describe distinct stages within the continuity architecture of evolution. Although these concepts are often treated as interchangeable, each addresses a different explanatory problem within the historical transformation of organised persistence.
Variation introduces novelty into organised persistence. Developmental processes, behavioural innovations, ecological interactions, genetic changes, and countless other sources of difference generate new organisational possibilities within ongoing biological continuity. Variation explains how biological organisation becomes capable of transformation without requiring the abandonment of continuity itself.
Adaptation determines whether that novelty can be incorporated into viable persistence. Through continuity-preserving reorganisation, living systems modify activity in ways that maintain the conditions required for continued existence under changing circumstances. Adaptation therefore acts as the organisational bridge between novelty and persistence, ensuring that change contributes to viability rather than undermining it.
Fitness concerns differential continuity among viable variants. Once alternative forms of organisation exist and remain viable, fitness identifies differences in their capacity to persist and reproduce through time. Fitness therefore does not explain how viability is maintained but how continuity differs among already viable alternatives.
Natural selection differentially stabilises those variants historically. Selection does not create variation, adaptation, or fitness. Rather, it acts upon existing differences in continuity, contributing to the long-term distribution and retention of biological organisation across generations. Selection therefore explains why some viable forms of organisation become historically more persistent than others.
