In APS, scale does not simply mean size.

Biological discussions often use scale to distinguish between larger and smaller entities, such as cells, organisms, populations, or ecosystems. While spatial extent is one aspect of scale, APS employs the concept in a broader explanatory sense.

Scale refers to the spatial and temporal dimensions across which organised persistence is coordinated, maintained, and transformed. A living system exists simultaneously across many scales because the activities required for viability occur across multiple dimensions of organisation and duration. Molecular repair, physiological regulation, behavioural adjustment, development, inheritance, and evolution all contribute to maintaining continuity, but they do so across different spatial and temporal scales.

Scale therefore concerns the organisation of persistence rather than the size of objects. Two processes may occur within the same physical structure while operating across very different temporal scales, just as processes occurring at very different spatial scales may contribute to maintaining the same organised system.

APS uses scale to describe how living organisation extends across space and time. The concept is relational rather than hierarchical because it focuses on the coordination of activities contributing to organised persistence rather than on the classification of entities by size.
