Biological boundaries are often assumed to coincide with physical boundaries such as membranes, bodies, or other material structures. Within APS, however, the most important boundaries are organisational rather than merely physical.
A physical boundary separates one region of matter from another. An organisational boundary separates the processes, constraints, and activities that contribute to maintaining viability-oriented organised persistence from those that do not. Physical structures frequently support such organisation, but they do not define it.
This distinction helps explain why living systems cannot always be understood by examining their material limits alone. Developmental dependencies, ecological relationships, symbioses, and other forms of organisational coupling often extend beyond obvious physical boundaries while remaining essential to persistence. Conversely, a system may possess clear material boundaries without exhibiting the organisational properties associated with life.
APS therefore treats biological boundaries as boundaries of organised persistence. The question is not simply where a system ends physically, but which organisational relationships participate in maintaining the conditions required for its continued existence.
