Many systems exhibit complex organisation without constituting autonomous living systems. Crystals maintain stable structures, flames sustain dynamic patterns, and viruses possess intricate molecular architectures capable of participating in evolutionary processes. Yet none of these systems actively maintain the conditions required for their own continued persistence. Their organisation is real, but the activities that sustain that organisation are either absent or dependent upon processes occurring elsewhere.
APS therefore distinguishes between organisation and autonomous viability-oriented organisation. Organisation refers to the structured arrangement of components, relations, and processes. Autonomous viability-oriented organisation exists when a system actively regulates and maintains the conditions necessary for its own persistence across changing circumstances. The distinction is important because biological explanation concerns not merely the existence of structure, but the ongoing activity through which living systems preserve organisational continuity through time.
This distinction explains why organisational complexity alone cannot serve as a definition of life. A system may possess elaborate internal organisation while remaining dependent upon external systems for the activities that sustain it. Complexity, information, replication, and structural sophistication may all be present without the system itself participating in the active maintenance of its own viability.
Viruses illustrate this distinction particularly clearly. Viral particles possess highly organised molecular structures and can direct complex replication processes once inside a host. However, the metabolic, regulatory, and organisational activities required for replication are supplied by the host system rather than generated by the virus itself. Viral persistence therefore depends upon the viability-oriented organisation of another system rather than upon an autonomous organisational regime of its own.
For APS, the defining question is not whether a system is organised, but whether it actively participates in sustaining the conditions of its own continued existence. Organisation may be present without autonomy. Life requires both.
