Natural selection is often described as though it creates biological organisation. APS rejects this interpretation because selection can operate only where living systems already exist as viable forms of organised persistence. Organisms maintain themselves through metabolism, regulation, development, behaviour, reproduction, and ecological interaction. These activities generate and sustain the organisational conditions that make evolutionary processes possible. Selection does not produce such organisation from non-organised material; rather, it acts upon systems whose viability has already been achieved and maintained through ongoing biological activity.
APS therefore interprets natural selection as differential stabilisation rather than the origin of biological organisation. Across populations and generations, some forms of viability-oriented organisation contribute more successfully to the realisation of viable life histories than others. These organisational configurations become more historically widespread, while others become less common or disappear. Selection thus influences which forms of organised persistence remain historically continuous, but it does not explain the existence of organised persistence itself.
This distinction clarifies the relationship between organisation and evolution. Organised persistence explains how living systems maintain viability under changing conditions, while natural selection explains how different forms of viable organisation become differentially stabilised across evolutionary history. Selection is therefore indispensable to evolutionary explanation, but it operates within a broader continuity architecture that includes persistence, adaptation, inheritance, development, variation, agency, and ecological interaction. Understanding natural selection therefore requires understanding the organisational conditions that make evolutionary continuity possible in the first place.
