Scientific explanations do not need to reproduce their targets in every respect to provide knowledge of reality. Representation differs from reproduction; selection differs from invention; and idealisation differs from arbitrariness. A model is ontologically informative when its constructed features enable investigators to identify dependencies, constraints, or patterns that remain answerable to evidence and survive appropriate comparison, intervention, and correction. Mediation describes how scientific access is achieved, not a barrier that confines inquiry to its own representations.
