Adaptation and natural selection are closely related, but they perform different explanatory roles.

Adaptation concerns how viability-oriented systems reorganise themselves in ways that preserve continuity under changing conditions. It explains how living systems maintain viability through physiological regulation, developmental flexibility, behavioural modification, ecological reorganisation, and other forms of continuity-preserving change.

Natural selection concerns the historical differential persistence of adaptive variants. It explains why some forms of biological organisation persist across generations more successfully than others.

In APS, adaptation is therefore not produced by selection. Living systems must already possess adaptive capacities if they are to remain viable long enough for selection to act upon them. Selection does not create continuity-preserving organisation; it influences which adaptive organisations become historically stabilised within evolving lineages.

Adaptation explains how organised persistence survives change.

Selection explains why some adaptive forms of organised persistence endure historically more successfully than others.
